What do you think of when you hear the word “relationship”? Most of us think of the relationship that we have with a partner, however, the word has come to mean any connection we have with another. We can be in relationship with family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors and even the doctor and the hairdresser.
Some synonyms for connection are link, tie, union, association, and bond. If we apply these words to people we can feel the nuances of difference. We may feel a bond with one person and an association with someone else. We are connected to many people in varying degrees.
Certainly, the quality and quantity of what you share will be determined by the level of connection. You may not tell a colleague what you would tell a family member. However, no matter what the level of connection is, you are the common denominator. You can share all of your self with someone even if you are not sharing all of the information. No matter what the level of connection, you can be fully present and fully genuine in the exchange. All of your relationships are richer when you are authentically engaged and speaking from your heart.
