Peppermint Oil for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

An estimated 20 to 50% of visits to gastroenterologists are for IBS. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules have brought relief to many IBS sufferers.

According to the American Gastroenterological Association “IBS is characterized by a lot of symptoms including abdominal cramping, lower abdominal pain, changes in bathroom behavior, gas, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.”

For years IBS was considered to be a psychological problem. But it’s not. There is an important connection between food sensitivities and IBS. Foods that might trigger problems are: wheat, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, citrus fruits, red meat and fried foods.

Research from two recent studies show an impressive 75% of patients were helped with peppermint oil. It is so effective that one group of researchers concluded that it might be the “drug of first choice” for certain IBS suffers.

Clinical trials investigated using 180 to 200 mg. of enteric coated peppermint oil in children with IBS or recurrent abdominal pain (one to two capsules three times daily over 24 weeks) resulted in a reduction of symptoms for 58%. Other researchers have suggested that the overall beneficial effect of peppermint oil might be due in part to its antimicrobial activity since bacterial overgrowth is associated with IBS.

Another viable and “natural” choice would be to ingest* therapeutic grade essential peppermint oil for a similar protocol. I would try 10 drops of peppermint oil in a blank veggie capsule and take with rice milk three times a day.

Also, rubbing Di-gize oil on your stomach three times daily would give positive results. Di-gize is a special blend formulated by Young Living which contains tarragon, juniper, anise, ginger, fennel, patchouli, peppermint, and lemongrass. When I overeat or have heartburn, a drop of Di-gize on my tongue has given me immediate relief and has been a good one to carry in my purse.

*Only therapeutic grade A oils may be safely ingested.

I have found the di-gize to be a life saver. I was in so much pain one day that I thought maybe I should go to the hospital. I decided to take a capsule of di-gize and with in a half hour I was better.
