In this segment, we will look at an area of vaccination related health that has been discussed quite a bit these days. The vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella has often been implicated in the development of autism. This is thought to be largely due to the preservative thimerosal and its content l mercury. Among other things, mercury is a neurotoxin and can lead to the “cut off” state that is so characteristic of autism. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention assures the vaccine’s safety (See www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/mmr_autism_factsheet ), we know that mercury is toxic, especially to the functioning of an infant’s developing brain and nervous system. As a concerned mother I have been doing a fair amount of research in this area. I have heard that thimerasol has not been used in vaccines for about 5 years. Is this true or not? Either way, are there certain vaccines one should avoid all together?
Hi Alexis, thank you for your comment and for your concern and research on such an important topic. As a mother, you know how crucial this topic is. Due to growing safety concerns, thimerosal has been reduced to trace levels or removed from many on the roster of vaccines that our children receive. This has occurred over the past few tears. What we must bear in mind is that the new formulations of some of the vaccines were approved by the FDA as recently as only a year and a half ago. We should consider the possibility of “old batch” formulations still in the system. Regarding avoiding particular vaccines altogether, this is more complex and the choice ultimately lies with individual parents, but we will look more at it in the next installment of The Needles Edge, with brand new research coming to the table.
