Cold, flu, and cough season is upon us. I was sitting in a doctor’s office today when a staff member walked by us coughing stating she did not want to get too close because she had a case of bronchitis. What a shame, she had to work while being sick. This is what we are facing as winter approaches, and we cannot avoid being exposed to the many “germs” floating around us and in our environment.
Because many essential oils have strong anti-microbial properties, they can be diffused to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria and viruses. Essential oils such as basil, hyssop, rosemary, tea tree, clove, oregano and thyme and blends such as Thieves, Purification, R.C. Raven and Sacred Mountain are effective as preventative aids in avoiding colds as well as in helping the body’s defenses to fight colds, once an infection has started. A Raindrop Treatment (massage with specific oils) also helps to boost the immune system and is recommended once a month for a prevention protocol or 1st signs of a cold.
The above oils can be inhaled 3-5 times daily or as needed. Several drops can also be ingested in a gel capsule and taken with milk or gargled with water. Remember, Young Living Essential Oils are therapeutic grade – not perfume grade. This means that most of them can be ingested safely.
For coughs, use a warm compress over oils applied to chest, throat and upper back. A good expectorant blend would include 3 drops of marjoram, 3 drops of ledum and 1 drop of lavender. For children or adults with sensitive skin, always dilute with a carrier oil (vegetable oil) before applying.
For final consideration, I would suggest taking Inner Defense if the taste or smell of oils are too strong for you. Inner Defense is a gel capsule containing oregano, thyme, clove, Eucalyptus radiata, cinnamon, rosemary, and lemon citronella. The powerful Thieves oil blend combined with the other oils support well-being when the body is stressed by strengthening the immune system and acting as a “natural” antibiotic.
Thieves oil was created from the research of a group of 15th century thieves who rubbed oils on themselves to avoid contracting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and dying. The formula of herbs, spices and oils that they used to protect themselves was later learned.
**All essential oils are not equal. Store bought or perfume grade oils are generally diluted, adulterated, and overheated. Therefore, results will not be the same as using Young Living Essential Oils.

Thanks for the tips!
Very interesting, where would I go about buying these oils? I feel like I never see them in stores.
What is the fundamental difference between store-bought oils and Young Living Essential Oils?
You mentioned using a carrier oil, such as vegetable oil, when applying to sensitive skin. Can the oils cause a rash or some sort of irritation?
The common cold often causes runny nose, sore throat, and malaise (vague discomfort).
