It’s funny how we try not to pay attention to the fact that we are getting older. Heck, I even have a way of looking at myself in the mirror that negates the reality of the years on my face. But life happens and when family and friends start showing age and you’ve gone over your funeral quota for the year you know time is passing.
Wow, I’m already depressed. Darn that Grim Reaper and those horrible Goth clothes he wears! Why does he always seem to be following us around? Death is something that always seemed to happen to other people when I was younger but that changed for me (as it sadly does for everyone) as the years marched on.
But here is the funny part-People really vocalize the passage of time when a celebrity ages.
Maybe it’s all those years growing up watching an actor or actress and seeing them age on that huge movie screen but I’ve seen people old as dirt say, ”Damn, he got old,” or “She looks terrible.” I guess that big screen really brings the aging process home for us all. The funny part is that we all do it. It’s even worse every year I watch the Academy Awards and they show clips of the stars that have died when they were in their prime the way we all want to remember them. Boy, do I cry like a baby.
My film heroes that I’ve grown up with are Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Gene Hackman, and Ed Harris. All of which, especially lately, have really shown their age. The funny part is that the age and experience only make them better and more interesting to watch.
In his seventies Eastwood has done some of his best directing and acting work, Tommy Lee Jones was amazing and Oscar nominated for In The Valley of Elah,
Ed Harris just stared in and directed Appaloosa and Harrison Ford put the fedora on again as Indiana Jones. Please come back out of retirement Gene Hackman because you are so much better than being the voice over guy in the Loews commercials!!
Whatever, the fact is that we get older everyday, as do our families, friends, and movie heroes. You can’t beat the clock and in the end the Grim Reaper will make his final cameo. I just ask that for now we all stop aging at least for the next hundred years. Just imagine how good all those extra Eastwood films would be.
