Is There Anyone Out There?

alienEver since H.G. Wells wrote of aliens in his classic novel War of the Worlds the planet has been intrigued. Mass hysteria even ensued when Orson Wells frightened New Jersey residents with that famous and controversial radio dramatization years later. Heck, we just can’t get enough of those aliens!

Steven Spielberg helped keep the interest alive in the late 70’s and early 80’s with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the Oscar nominated classic E.T. He also produced the Men in Black movies and Taken for the SCI-Fi Channel about alien abduction. A few years back he even directed his own updated take on War of the Worlds starring that zany scientologist who loves couch jumping just as much as Scotty likes warp speed-The Sci-Fi Geek in me couldn’t resist.

Great Science-Fiction classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still and its awful and unnecessary remake still generate interest.

Even this year the film Knowing had a nice alien slant to its story. Yes, we love the possibility of life out there and anyone who’s ever watched documentaries about alien sightings knows there may just be something beyond those old and blacked out declassified documents.

Do aliens exist or not? What would it mean if they did? Do they monitor our radio broadcasts and televisions? Could they actually be fans of American Idol and if so does that mean they will destroy the planet? Do they look like E.T. or Jeff Bridges in Starman? Do they assume human form and could your neighbor be one of them? These are interesting questions and some have insisted aliens are real while others have stated that is insanity.

Great writers and comic book artists have imagined whole worlds of aliens for us to enjoy. Filmmakers have helped bring them further to our imaginations. Last night I looked up in the beautiful, starry skies and wondered about them myself.

Some have claimed to see hovering saucers that glow brightly in the night sky just above the clouds, as if to remind us we are not alone out there. No matter what your thoughts on the subject one inevitable question remains-Is there anyone out there?

    GOOD QUESTION!! FASCINATING TOPIC!
IT SEEMS IMPROBABLE AND SELF-CENTERED TO THINK WE ARE THE ONLY SPECIES IN THE UNIVERSE.

  2. Peter Alexander says:

Thought provoking… one wonders about these outer creatures, worlds.
